Stains and Smells? No Problem

JCS Painting uses Kilz blocking primer that allows us to paint over stains, smells and major discoloration. Using a Kilz allows us to cover substances and smells within walls and ceilings that would otherwise show or smell through the new paint. Traditionally it would have taken many coats of paint to cover the stains and smells that our team can now cover with simple coats of Kilz primer. The use of this advanced primer also maximizes the adhesion of the paint layers allowing a fast and efficient job that will last like it should.

Kilz is able to cover stains and odors such as:

  • Food Odor
  • Pet Odor
  • Smoke Odor
  • Water Stains
  • Felt Marker
  • Ink
  • Grease Stains

With a well established reputation and over four decades of experience covering up stains, Kilz is one of the highest quality products in it’s class. Although Kilz does come in a variety of colours, these colours are only meant to come close to the surface colour in order to minimize the number of top coats required. The number of top coats will also vary based on the colour chosen and how it compares to the base coat colour. After the application of Kilz blocking primer to cover up any unwanted stains or odors on the surface, our team will apply finishing layers to turn your dreams into reality.

What Type of Kilz Primer Should You Use?

For anyone not familiar with the line of products that Kilz offers, the number of variations can be confusing, luckily for us our team put together a summary of their different products and when to use them:

What Kilz Primer to Use for Blocking Stains?

When you have a stain that risks bleeding through paint, Kilz Primer is a good choice, and in fact it’s our choice in most situations. There are a variety of primers that are meant to block stains, but Kilz has a large line of products including both water an oil based primers that do a great job of covering up tough stains.

There are many different intensities of stains, from major to minor. In the event you are trying to cover up a serious stain, you will likely be looking for Kilz Max, and if it’s a lighter stain, then you should likely choose Kilz Premium. If you are unsure of which version you should be using, feel free to give us a call, or contact your local paint supplier.

What Kilz Primer to Use for Drywall?

Porous surfaces can absorb top coats and result in lesser quality results in your paint project that will look uneven and undesirable. Priming a porous surface will help you get a professional look every time. You will also use much less paint by priming a porous surface first, and who doesn’t like to save money?

Porous surfaces include:

1. Concrete
2. New wood
3. Drywall

What Kilz Primer to Use for Promoting Adhesion?

Most people know that paint doesn’t adhere to all surfaces the same, but do you know which surfaces can be the most difficult to paint? Here’s a list of surfaces that can be hard to cover with paint:

1. Slick
2. Glossy
3. Aluminum
4. PVC
5. Ceramic tile
6. Glass

Without proper priming to provide adhesion, paint may peel, flake, crack or blister. Don’t forget to properly prepare the surface before you prime. This will help ensure the best possible outcome.

What Kilz Primer to Use for Pet Odors?

Odors can pop up anywhere, including on the surfaces of your home or business. When you want odors covered up, standard paint just won’t do as odor carrying molecules can penetrate the dry film of paint. Using Kilz primer allows you to easily block out odors and keep them out for good. With Kilz, you are able to block odors such as:

1. Pets
2. Smoke damage
3. Food prep
4. Musty smells

KILZ MAX® is usually the best Kilz product to block odors.

What Kilz Primer Will Cover Dark Colors?

Anytime you decide to change the colour of a space, priming before painting is usually a good idea. This is especially true if you are painting over very dark or very bright colours. Using a primer before painting helps to ensure you get the colour you planned and will save you paint in the long run! Standard Kilz Primer will satisfy most if not all priming needs. If you are planning you use a top coat that is a drastically different colour, or a very unique colour, you can look at the coloured primer line from Kilz, or tint the standard white to help make the transition easier and save even more top coat.

Use fewer coats of paint by doing the following:

1. Always prime first when covering very dark or bright colors
2. Try using a tinted primer
3. Make sure you have the right primer for easy coverage

What Kilz Primer to Use for Mold?

Mildew is common in smaller areas where there is excessive moisture such as bathrooms. Painting over mold and mildew can help cover up the problem, but will only disguise it for a short period of time. Painting over mold and mildew doesn’t get rid of it and as such, Kilz primer should be used. For best results covering mold or mildew, follow these steps:

1. Clean the affected area
2. Allow to dry completely
3. Prime with Kilz
4. Paint with a mildew resistant finish

Cleaning the affected area will remove the mold and mildew so it can’t return. Just remember to let the surfaces dry fully before painting. Any moisture on the surface will negatively impact the adhesion of the primer and paint resulting in poor results. Using both a Kilz primer and top coat that have mildew resistant properties will help the are stay clean in the future.
